Biographical / Historical

Earl Raymond Benedict worked as a farm laborer, railroad clerk, and in the grocery industry, rising from a clerk to a salesman to the manager and finally becoming the owner. Born in St. Albans in 1894, he was the oldest child of Carl James Benedict (1869-1939) and Frances Minerva Parcher (1869-1955). In 1928 he married Irene A. Giffin (1889-1971). Census records, city directories, and cemetery information indicate that Benedict ran the market at 1398 North Avenue from 1933 (taking over from Cecil A. St. Germain) until his death in 1955. In 1963 it became Bessery's Market, when Peter Bessery assumed ownership. Over the next 50 or more years, several Bessery family members were involved in its operation.
