Lucretia Wilson Dutton Papers

The collection consists of thirty-three letters received by Lucretia Wilson Dutton from members of her family during the years 1824-1855. There are five letters from William Wilson, Lucretia's brother, written between 1824 and 1836. The first includes a detailed description of Burlington and UVM, while the remaining four were written from Tallahassee, Florida, and offer some interesting material about that area in the 1820s and '30s. There are also twenty-three letters from Jane L. Dutton Witherby (Lucretia's daughter) and her husband R.L. Witherby, all from Grafton, MA, in the period 1845-1848. These letters consist mostly of family matters and everyday local news. The collection also consists of twelve letters from Julia A. Dutton, Lucretia's daughter, written from Clinton, MA, in the years 1845-1855. These include considerable noteworthy detail regarding the life of a mill girl and the area around Worcester, MA. The letters have been arranged chronologically.

The Dutton Collection was donated by Mrs. Aileen Dodds Eurich, of Waitsfield, VT, in September of 1978. Mrs. Eurich has requested that patrons use the photocopies of the letters (folders 42 through 46) whenever possible in order to preserve the originals.
