Scope and Content

The Zephine Humphrey Papers are composed primarily of typescripts of her writings, both published and unpublished. Included are drafts of eight short stories and essays, but the majority of the collection is made up of a long typescript of Humphrey's unpublished journal for the years 1941-1945. The collection is completed by a small group of newspaper clippings about her books, and some correspondence of Zephine and other members of the Fahnestock family (1945-1959).

Biography

Born in Philadelphia on December 15, 1874, Zephine Humphrey Fahnestock was a noted writer of fiction and short essays. She graduated from Smith College in 1896, and moved to Dorset, Vermont, after marrying Wallace Fahnestock. Friend to Dorothy Canfield Fischer, Sarah N. Cleghorn and other Vermont writers, Zephine Humphrey achieved considerable regional popularity for her books and articles on Vermont and the New England way of life. Her books include Over Against Green Peak; The Story of Dorset; The Beloved Community; Green Mountains to Sierras; and A Book of New England Things. Zephine Humphrey died in Dorset in 1956.
