Scope and Content

The Vermont Baptist Historical Society Papers consist primarily of local church historical papers and biographical sketches of Vermont baptist clergymen and church leaders. The Papers are arranged almost entirely by location, including the biographical data sheets and questionnaires. A separate cross-index by name has been appended to the Inventory to indicate the town folders in which individuals' biographical materials have been placed. See the Separated Materials note for a list of Baptist town church records that have been removed from this collection and interfiled among the Bound Manuscripts.

History

The Vermont Baptist Historical Society was founded in 1876 to collect and preserve manuscripts and information relating to the Baptist churches and clergymen of Vermont. The Society purchased the extensive collections of Rev. Cyprian P. Frenyear, who had gathered together considerable amounts of material pertaining to Vermont Baptists before his death in 1876. Building upon the Frenyear foundations, the Society amassed a great number of historical sketches of local churches, originals and copies of records of local Baptist churches and associations, and biographical sheets on Baptist clergymen who had served in Vermont. In addition, the Society collected hundreds of late nineteenth century newspaper clippings dealing with Vermont Baptist churches and clergy. Finally, the Society was largely responsible for the compilation and eventual publication fo Henry Crocker's History of the Baptists in Vermont (Bellows Falls: P.H. Gobie Press, 1913).
