Biographical / Historical

The Flynn Center, also known as the Flynn Theater and the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, is a performing arts space in Burlington, Vermont founded in 1930 by John J. Flynn. The building, located in downtown Burlington, is a landmark and hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Originally, the space served as a movie theater as well as a musical theater, before falling into disuse by the 1970s. In 1972, the Flynn changed hands and was revitalized through a reintroduction of live performances and successive waves of building restoration, beginning in 1981, and capital campaigns to build an endowment.

Lyric Theater, a performing arts troupe, played an integral role in the revitalization of the Flynn in the 1970s and 80s. In 1980, the group formed the Flynn Theater for the Performing Arts, Ltd. and drafted a purchasing agreement with Merrill Jarvis, the then current owner. Andrea Rogers, the director of the group and later director of the Flynn until 2010, assisted in organizing community fundraising to promote the ownership transfer. In September 2000, the Flynn "reopened" as a performing arts space.

The Flynn Center has hosted various programs throughout the years, such as the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival and the UVM Lane Series which are annual musical events taking place in the Fall and Spring.
