Scope and Content Note

Collection contains drawings, project files, and office files that document the professional work of The Burley Partnership (TPB) from its beginnings as the office of Robert Burley in 1963 through 2000, at which time the partnership, with its office in Waitsfield, included two other principles, Jay White and Bill Gallup, as well as several other staff members.

The approximately 121.5 linear feet of project files include correspondence, memos, specifications, collected research, contracts, photographs, legal records, change orders, bid documents, reports, punch lists, sketches, and other records which document TBP's range of services, their relationship with their clients, the design and construction processes, and the wide range of projects the firm completed over nearly four decades of work.

The 45 map drawers of drawings include design sketches and the construction drawings that represent the latest record of the project as built that are extant. These drawing document the design process as well as the final constructed building.

The approximately 3.5 linear feet of office records include legal records, project management records, proposals and other marketing materials, and correspondence and minutes documenting partnership members' work with a variety of professional organizations, with an emphasis on historical preservation. There are also some materials from Burley's early days with Eero Saarinen and Associates.

Biographical Note

Robert Burley is founding principal of The Burley Partnership in Waitsfield, VT, an award-winning architecture, planning and historic preservation firm. Burley previously worked in the firm of Eero Saarinen and Associates, where he was placed in charge of design teams for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial as well as for the U.S. Embassy in London and the World Health Center Competition in Zurich. Design principles and methodologies developed in the Saarinen office have strongly influenced The Burley Partnership, where major projects have included the Vermont Capitol Complex Master Plan and an expansion of the Vermont State House.
