Biographical Note

Miriam Chapin was born in Chicago, Illinois in August 1886. She grew up to be a writer who divided her time between the United States and Canada, spending winters in Montreal and summers in East Wallingford, Vermont. Her books included English translations of French-Canadian works as well as her own pieces on Canada.

In 1957, Chapin had an article pushed in the December issue of Harper’s Magazine titled "Vermont: Where are all those Yankees" in which she describes herself as a "sixth generation Vermonter" and turns a critical eye on the current condition of the state and its citizens. The article garnered mostly negative media attention in the area from Vermont citizens who felt she was overly critical. Other research interests included linguistics and labor unions, particularly those in Vermont.

She married Edward Chapin in 1912 and the couple had four children before divorcing in 1947. Chapin died in Montreal in December 1965.
