He worked as a farmer in several Washington County, Vermont towns including Woodbury, Calais, and East Montpelier. He was married twice: to Mary Ann Slayton (1836-1873) in 1868 and to Abba Adeline Sloan, nicknamed "Ada" and "Addie," (1858-1954) in 1877. Addie was born in Calais to Lyman Aruna Sloan (1821-1877) and Lucy Ann Lindsay (1829-1921). She had several siblings including a sister named Ella.
