Biographical / Historical

George Henry Randall was born in Westborough, Massachusetts on April 22, 1827 to Elisha and Eleanor Randall. He married Isabella Walker (born about 1830 in Derby Vermont to William and Margaret Walker) on June 28, 1848 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. She died on July 21, 1848. He later married Emma Abbott (daughter of Jonathan and Lucy Crosby Abbott). She was born in about 1836 in Glover, Vermont. George and Emma had two children: Harriet "Hattie" Gertrude Randall and Henry Stoughton Randall. Hattie was born on March 17, 1860 in Albany, Vermont. George enlisted in the 4th Vermont Militia as a fifer (musician) on August 30, 1861. Henry was born on February 9, 1862 while George was away at war. In his letters, George refers to his son as Stoughton Plummer, the name he preferred, while Emma wanted the name Henry included. George was discharged on February 25, 1863 due to disability from illness. He was transported north and died on May 12, 1863 from consumption. Tragically, Hattie died shortly thereafter on July 21, 1863. Emma died of consumption at age 40 on March 22, 1876. Henry married Clara M. Wilson (1871-1899) in 1888 and they had two children: George Henry Randall (1891-1972) and Gertrude M. Randall (1892-1899). Henry died on August 31, 1911.

George H. Randall appears in the Revised Roster of Vermont Volunteers and Lists of Vermonters Who Served in the Army and Navy of the United States During the War of Rebellion, 1861-1866. He was part of the 4th Vermont Infantry, Company D, serving as a musician from Glover, VT (which matches the address of his correspondence to his wife) with an enlistment date of 1861 August 30, and a discharge date, due to disability, of February 25, 1863. This period is documented in this collection. Note that this name is also present earlier as part of the 3rd Vermont Infantry, Company A, serving as a private from Springfield with an enlistment date of June 1, 1861 and a discharge date of November 20, 1862 due to disability. The index in the roster does not treat this case as two people who happen to have the same name. The towns of Glover and Springfield are over 100 miles apart. The second enlistment date is before the first discharge date, so it seems more likely they are different people. Note that 2 separate death records disagree about his age at death (whether 34 or 36 in 1863), but his grave stone gives the age of 36 and the 1860 census gives his age as 33, so the birth year of 1827 and age at death of 36 is used here.

Records on ancestry commonly include the following transcription errors: Stanghton for Stoughton and Randell for Randall. Curiously the 1900 US Census does not include George Henry Randall in his father Henry Stoughton Randall's household; instead, George is listed as the son of a family called Quimby, possibly the family of his teacher Nina Quimby and her parents, living in Concord, Vermont, despite his father Henry living in the same town. In the 1910 US Census, George and Henry again live together.
