Scope and Content Note

Hayden's papers have been sold in separate parts over the course of several years. This collection of photographs was unidentified when it was purchased in 1988. It contains 71 photographs, cartes-de-visites, and cabinet cards, of Hayden's family, friends, classmates and faculty at the University, the Essex Classical Insitute in Essex Center, the interior of an unidentified library, and a flower arrangement "presented to the Class of '83 by the lady members, Saturady October 18, 1879." There were seven women in the UVM class of 1883, but only one graduated, Caro Frances (Barker) Kingsley.

Biographical Note

Chauncey Hoyt Hayden was born in Bakersfield, Vermont, on March 31, 1857. He prepared for college at schools in Barre and Essex. Graduating from the Unversity of Vermont in 1883, he was employed as a school principal for fourteen years in Underhill, Hinesburgh, Essex Junction, and Essex Center (at the Essex Classical Institute). Later he was employed as a merchant.
