Church Women United (Vermont) Papers
Scope and Content
The C.W.U. collection contains several volumes of club publicity (1953-1968) informing the general public of what the C.W.U. was planning and carrying out. The collection also contains records of a few meetings (1963-1974), a presidents scrapbook (1968-1977) containing newspaper articles, photographs, and records of group actions, a copy of the Proclamation of International Womens year (1975), and a history of the organization.
Also included in the collection is a history of the Fortnightly Club, founded in 1900. This Club is a literary organization for Burlington women. The early years were devoted to studying the works of Shakespeare. The club began to study other authors in the early teens. During the 1920s they devoted most of their time to drama and book reviews. The Fortnightly Executive Committee prepared a list of books from which the members could choose.

History
Church Women United, organized at a state meeting on December 8, 1944, was a merger of the Vermont chapters of the National Council of Women, the Council for Home Missions, and the Committee on Women's Work of the Foreign Missions Conference. The purpose of the merger was to avoid competition for funds and leadership among denominational groups, and to achieve common goals.
United Council of Church Women (the name of the organization was changed from that to the Church Women United) was to be the agency through which Vermont church women could best serve their common cause of effective christian witness by exerting their influence unitedly and by supporting the many programs of study and action initiated by the C.W.U. These women have had a long history of working for charitable causes. During WWII they had many clothing drives and worked hard to make up Red Cross relief packages. They are also very active in the preparation for and carrying out of the World Day of Prayer.
