Scope and Content

The Martha D. Kennedy Papers, 1946-1978, were received in two installments, and these remain as two separate collections. The papers are arranged in alphabetical order by topic. The collection consists of correspondence, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and other printed material relating to the various organizations with which Martha was involved. Principle subjects include: American Friends Service Committee, Champlain Peace Council, N.A.A.C.P., anti-Vietnam groups, League of Women Voters, United World Federalists and Vermont Council on World Affairs. Some items of interest are autographs of Martin Luther King, Jr. and of other political figures.

Biography

Martha D. Kennedy was born in Enosburg Falls, Vermont, in 1917. She is the grand-daughter of Olin Merrill, a state legislator who served in both Houses and who was State Chairman of the Republican party in the early 1900s. Martha attended Pierce Business School in Philadelphia, graduated in 1940, and returned to Vermont to work in the UVM Business Offices until 1944. She began taking courses in politics and economics at UVM and graduated in 1952 with a B.A. She married A. Grant Kennedy and they had three children.

Martha was active in many political and social organizations and she embraced the Quaker faith. She was a member of the Burlington League of Women Voters from 1946-1954, and as a member of the Champlain Peace Council, she was involved in the anti-Vietnam movements in the 1960s. She wsa also active in the Civil Rights movement, and contributed to the N.A.A.C.P. In 1954 she ran an unsuccessful campaign for the State House of Representatives as an Independent candidate.
