Scope and Content Note

The Hayward Severance Memorial Collection contains personal correspondence arranged chronologically from 1958 through 1971. It also contains typescript of Green Mountain Gateway: The Story of the Rutland Railway, and handnotes of the same. Also included are other articles and handnotes written by Severance, Appalachian Trail Log and Bulletins, Central Vermont Railway (timetables), Long Trail News, post cards and miscellaneous publications, The Railway and Locomotive Historical Society Bulletins, Rutland Railway miscellaneous printed material and newspaper clippings, and the Vermont Historical Society's News and Notes.

Biographical Note

Hayward Merriam Severance was born January 19, 1887, in Buffalo, New York. His parents were Frank Hayward Severance and Lena Lilian (Hill) Severance. He attended Masten Park High School (Buffalo), Cornell University, and the University of California (B.S. 1910--Chemistry). He worked two field seasons for the U.S. Forest Service in Siskiyou County, California, and did graduate work at California and the University of Chicago. Severance then taught chemistry at Chico High School (California), the University of Arizona, Oregon State College, and from 1931-52 at Los Angeles City College. He retired in 1952.

Hayward Severance was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Emeritus), American Chemical Society, Ecological Society of America, Nature Conservancy, Sigma Xi, Sierra Club, Green Mountain Club, Vermont Historical Society, Isle LaMotte Historical Society, and Buffalo, New York, and Erie County Historical Society.
