Scope and Content

The St. Paul's Episcopal Church Papers include a wide range of materials from the period 1830-1973. There are letters and other papers relating to the establishment of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont in the early 1830s, as well as the record book of the Episcopal Society of Burlington from its foundation on December 6, 1830, through the mid-1870s. The collection contains a good deal of material concerning the building of St. Paul's Church and its nineteenth century renovations and enlargements, including bills and receipts, construction subscription books, and building deeds and contracts. Other financial aspects of church affairs in the 1800s are also covered in the Papers, in the form of treasurers' reports, records of pew rents and payments, numerous subscription books, miscellaneous bills and receipts, and so on. There are some papers and records of late nineteenth-early twentieth century Church societies and clubs such as the Canterbury Club, the Girls Friendly Society and the Young Women's Auxiliary. The twentieth century papers also include service record books for 1900-1929, a 1945 St. Pauls' Church School scrapbook, Church annual reports for 1854-72, and materials relating to the fire which destroyed St. Paul's in 1971 and the subsequent erection of the new building.

The collection has been grouped by general subject or type of material and then arranged chronologically within those groups. Bound volumes have been placed after the folders of loose manuscripts.
