Burlington City Assessor Records

This collection contains cards from Burlington's Office of the City Assessor. The cards list the property values of real estate in the city of Burlington for tax assessment purposes. The cards are arranged into two sets, one for the property's street address and the other for owner name.

The street cards are arranged by street name and address number. Properties without numbers are included at the end of each street's section. The street cards list owner names over time, the dates when the property was sold, and a reference to city records (volume and page) where sales transactions were formally recorded. On the reverse is a snapshot of the the property's assessed value at different points in time (mainly within the range 1926-1990). The cards also hold minimal details of the structure, specifically construction category (usually timber frame), type (usually single family), and occasionally a size estimate.

The owner cards are arranged alphabetically by last name and list the owner(s) names, property street address, a reference to city records (volume and page) that describe the property, the date of sale, previous owner(s) (as "grantor") and subsequent owner(s) (as "conveyed to"), plus dates and references to city records where the sales transactions were formally recorded. On the reverse, the appraised value and year of appraisal is noted (mainly within the date range 1900-1985). Multiple cards can be present for one owner who owns more than one property.
