Orrin G. Baker Sermons

 Collection
Identifier: mss-250

Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of sermons written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Reverend Orrin G. Baker. Almost all of his sermons are handwritten, with the exception of a small number of typewritten versions.

The sermon titles provided here were derived from Baker’s consistent notes regarding the Biblical sources on which the sermon was based. Suggestions for related hymns were often included. There is evidence of later revisions and additions made to these papers, but it is easy to ascertain which writing was done first so as not to confuse titles.

Users should note that sermons appear to have been used on multiple dates in various locations. Baker commonly recorded the year and location every time he preached a particular sermon, sometimes reusing a sermon over 30 times and recording each instance. The dates used in the collection are the earliest date provided on each sermon. Baker assigned a number to a majority of his writings and these numbers are presented in the titles within parentheses. Sermons with numbers are arranged in order while those without numbers are organized by the year Baker noted.

Additional printed material consists of copies of prayer pamphlets and pages from religious publications, as well as hand written papers from Baker that appear to be a mix of notes, drafts, and partial sermons.

Biographical Note

Reverend Orrin G. Baker was born December 23, 1847 in Derry, New Hampshire. After attending Dartmouth College and Andover Theological Seminary, he was ordained in 1874 and became a Congregational minister, preaching around Vermont from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. He spent most of his time in the Jamaica area but also travelled frequently to communities in Franklin, Ferrisburg, Fairfield, and West Charleston. He had a background in geology and astronomy and would incorporate these topics into his sermons. The contents of his sermons were once examined by former University of Vermont librarian T.D Seymour Bassett during his research on shifts in Christian belief in the late 19th century. Baker died on June 17, 1930, and is buried in Framingham, Massachusetts.
