Scope and Content Note

The Edward G. Janeway Papers are comprised primarily of correspondence pertaining to Mr. Janeway's involvement with the local Vermont and National Republican Party from 1952-1973, particularly his involvement with the management of Republican state finances and the Republican National Committee. The collection includes political discourse from multiple Republican State Conventions and Committees, mixed materials related to the election of President Eisenhower, Mr. Janeway's response in regards to the Joseph P. McCarthy controversy in 1954, and Mr. Janeway's response in regards to the Watergate Affair in 1973.

Materials are largely textual, comprising correspondence, ordinances, memoranda, minutes and agendas, financial materials, reports and proposals, newspaper clippings, printed ephemera, and campaign paraphernalia. In addition, the collection contains a small number of undated photographs, presumably of Mr. Janeway himself.

Biographical Note

Mr. Janeway was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., and attended Yale University. He was self-employed as an investment broker on Wall Street until World War II when he joined the Navy, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander.

After the war, Mr. Janway moved to Londonderry, where he was elected a State Representative, serving from 1951 to 1955. He served as State Senator from Windham County from 1959 until he retired from politics in 1976. For the last several terms, he served as President pro tem.

Edward G. Janeway, a former State Senator in Vermont, died on January 10th, 1986 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center at Hanover, N.H., after a brief illness. He was 84 years old and lived in South Londonderry, Vt.

At the time of his death Mr.Janeway's family consisted of: his wife, the former Eleanor White; his five children, Elsie J. Apthorp of Concord, Mass., Priscilla J. Sherwood of West Brattleboro, Vt., Edward G. Janeway Jr. of Norwich, Vt., Harold W. Janeway of Contoocook, N.H., and Betsy A. Janeway of Lancaster, Mass.; 18 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
