Scope and Contents

The Joseph B. Johnson Papers contain records from Joseph Blaine Johnson, Governor of Vermont 1954-1959. The collection includes both political and personal papers. The personal papers include correspondence, subject files such as financial records, boards and committees to which Johnson belonged, and charitable pursuits. The personal series also contains memorabilia such as date books, travel diaries, and objects such as plaques and graduation regalia. The political papers include subject files: records of state departments, bills, and political actions with which Johnson participated. Also included are political correspondence, publicity such as transcripts of radio talks, speeches, and newspaper clippings. Campaign materials for each of Johnson's state political campaigns are also included. The collection also contains photographs, both personal/familial and from Johnson's political career. Personal subject files and memorabilia are arranged alphabetically, while other series and subseries are arranged chronologically.

Biographical/Historical

Joseph Blaine Johnson (1893-1986) was born in Sweden and moved to Vermont in 1894. He attended University of Vermont, graduating in 1915 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He married Virginia Slack Johnson and they had daughter Anna Patricia (Patsy) Johnson. Joseph Johnson worked as Vice President and General Manager for Bryant Chucking Grinder Company until 1949 when he retired in order to run for Vermont State Senator from Windsor County. He later was elected Lieutenant Governor and then Governor in 1954. He served two terms as governor until 1959. Johnson died in 1986.

Abstract

Collection contains correspondence, printed matter, newsletters, clippings, plans, reports, speeches, meeting minutes, hearings proceedings, legislative materials, campaign materials, scrapbooks, diaries, many photographs, and other materials documenting Johnson's political career including his terms as Governor of VT, 1954-1959.
