Biographical / Historical

The Springfield Ice Company was reorganized and incorporated in 1915; an incorporation attempt in 1874 appears to have failed. Information about the business is scarce. A mention in the Chester Advertiser from December 29, 1906 notes that 20 men were employed in that season's ice harvest. Up to that point, 3,000 ice "cakes" measuring 16 inches thick and weighing 200-250 pounds each had been secured.

Clare John Parker (1904-1987) worked for the Springfield Ice Company as a manager (circa 1930), Secretary Treasurer (circa 1934), and owner (circa 1940). His father, Robert B. Parker (1877-1959) also worked for the Springfield Ice Company in different roles, including as a machinist, circa 1930. It appears that both men moved to Springfield from Massachusetts, with their families, between 1920 and 1930. Robert married Hattie J. Bell (1881-1961) and they had 3 younger sons. Clare married Mary Alice Blodgett (1904-1994) in 1928; they had three children: Clare John, Mary, and Ruth.
