Longhouse Publishers & Booksellers Records

 Collection
Identifier: mss-937

Scope and Content Note

The Longhouse Records contain correspondence and manuscripts of poetry and prose (including multiple drafts and proofs). Slight mixing of material types was present in the material as received and has been maintained. Published material is not present in this collection.

Correspondence consists of letters, cards, and postcards that covers literary, business, personal (daily life, health, weather), and political topics. Some poems were enclosed with correspondence and remain. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by author's last name. All correspondence was written to Bob Arnold unless otherwise noted.

Manuscripts are arranged in two ways: identifiable projects are collected under author's last name and project title; additional pieces were gathered into large alphabetical files by author's last name. Arnold's poems are presented in their original order though grouped in broad date ranges.

Historical Note

Longhouse, Publishers & Booksellers, was established in 1971 by the poet and editor, Bob Arnold. Joined by Susan in 1974, they have published hundreds of folders, chapbooks, broadsides, anthologies and small edition books by mimeograph, letterpress, photocopy and off-set. Specializing in poetry, several noted writers have worked with Longhouse over its more than forty years of operation. Notable writers represented in this collection include Cid Corman, David Giannini, Lyle Glazier, Ted Enslin, Janine Pommy Vega, Louise Landes Levi, Charlie Mehrhoff, and John Levy. Since the 1980's Longhouse has specialized in the sale of new, used, out-of-print and rare modern poetry titles, literary first editions and signed editions, small press ("little") magazines, books on the counter-culture, the Beats and the arts. Integrating the bookselling and publishing business with a working and family life, Bob Arnold makes a living as a stonemason.
