Biographical Note
Hildreth Tyler Wriston was born in Enosburg Falls, June 27, 1899, where her father was editor of the Enosburg Standard. She was graduated from Enosburg High School in 1917 and from the University of Vermont in 1921 where she was a member of Phi Beta Phi sorority and of the Mortar Board senior honor society. Mrs. Wriston wrote ten children's books which were published by well-known publishing houses in New York. Thorough and accurate research are earmarks of her work. They remain a good source for students of Vermont history. Best known among her books were three Junior Literary Guild selections: Camping Down at Highgate, Open Water, and Susan's Secret. Several of her articles have appeared in national magazines including Vermont Life. Mrs. Wriston and her husband were connected with hotel operations in Vermont, New England, Maryland, and Florida for forty years, the last eight years of which they were owners of the Tavern in Grafton. Retiring in 1962, Mrs. Wriston died May 25, 1969.
