Scope and Contents

The Peter Clavelle Records contain papers from Peter Clavelle's time in Burlington city hall as personnel director, director of the Community and Economic Development Office (CEDO), and mayor. The records include subject files focused on actions Clavelle was involved with, correspondence and memos, newspaper articles, message and date books, and photographs. The photographs primarily depict Clavelle's professional actions, but there are some personal family photographs as well. Major actions Clavelle was involved with in Burlington included waterfront development, climate change/energy sustainability, economic development of downtown Burlington, and the housing crisis including cooperation with University of Vermont.

There is some material related to Bernie Sanders' mayoral terms (pre-1989) and Peter Brownell's mayoral term (1993-1995).

The series titled Photographs also includes negatives and slides which are stored together.

Biographical/Historical note

Peter Clavelle was born in Burlington, VT in 1949 and grew up in Winooski, VT. He attended Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington, received his BA at St. Anselm College and his Master's degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University. Clavelle was the mayor of Burlington, VT for a total of seven terms, 1989-1993 and 1995-2006. He was preceded by Bernie Sanders, lost an election to Peter Brownell who served the term 1993-1995, then won re-election in 1995. Prior to serving as mayor, Clavelle joined the Burlington city government as Personnel Director and was named Director of Community and Economic Development Office (CEDO) by Bernie Sanders in 1983. Clavelle and his wife Betsy Ferries have three children, Luke, Jae, and Will. After leaving the mayor's office in 2006 Clavelle spent several years working in Albania.

Abstract

Peter Clavelle served as mayor of Burlington, Vermont 1989-1993 and 1995-2006. Prior to his mayoral terms, Clavelle acted as personnel director and director of the Community and Economic Development Office (CEDO) in Burlington's city hall. The collection contains Clavelle's records related to actions with which he was involved, correspondence, message books, and photographs. The collection contains the mayor's personal records of correspondence, alphabetical files, international country files, budgets, speeches and writings, message book, date books, photographs and slides, newspaper clippings, and Burlington International Airport and UVM materials, as well as some early CEDO records.
