Carlos Hatch Diaries
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of small pocket diaries documenting the activities of Carlos Hatch, of Worcester, Vermont, over several decades. Entries are handwritten in pencil. The content regards the weather and daily activities including farm work, local travel, and family events. Financial notes are present occasionally. Some years are represented by two diaries, presumably relating to time spent in different locations.
Some diaries show signs of minimal wear and minimal pest damage. Most diaries were produced by "Standard Diary" and contain several pages of general information such as calendars, weights and measures, tide tables, phases of the moon, population tables, interest laws, postage, etc.

Biographical / Historical
Carlos Hatch (1848-1938) was a farmer based in Worcester, Vermont. He was the son of Peter Hatch (about 1811-1895) and Philena Hoyt (about 1806-1854, m. 1839). Peter's father Estes (born between about 1748 and 1752, died 1838) was a Revolutionary War soldier.
In 1877, Carlos married Joanna (or Johanna) Chapin (about 1849-1899) from Middlesex, Vermont. They had four children: Martha E. Hatch (1878-1931, married Herbert E. Pierce (1874-1924)), Arthur (1880-1883), Elsie Hatch (1882-1972, married Henry Orlando Leonard (1883-1961)), and Theron W. Hatch (1884-1972, married Elsie A. Verill (about 1882-1939) in 1935 and Margaret Knowles Turner (1906-2001) in 1941).
The Hatch family also lived in Middlesex, with the Chapin family. Joanna’s parents were Asa Chapin (1807-1888) and Sebrina or Sabrina Preston (about 1806-1888). The Chapin family includes members in the SAR and DAR by virtue of the service of Joseph Chapin (about 1758-1851). A partial family tree is available.
