Historical Note
Established in 1909 as Manning and Walker Dairy Supply Company, the name changed to Manning Manufacturing in 1911. Its president was Edward A. Manning (1857-1947) and the company's success made him a prominent local businessman. The company was often mentioned in the Rutland Herald. Periods of expansion resulted in moving to larger facilities in 1911 and 1914, new construction in 1919, and an increase in capital stock in 1922. In 1946, the plant was sold to Modern Linen Service Inc.
In 1887, Edward married Ada N. Niles (1868-1965). They had two children, Earle Valentine (1888-1922) and Roy Allen (1892-1953). Both worked for the Manning Manufacturing Company in various capacities, including the role of treasurer. Roy also worked as manager of the Manning's Filling Station location in Rutland. When the manufacturing plant was sold, other filling stations in Burlington, Vermont; Fort Ann, New York; and Glens Falls, New York remained in operation.
Edward's brother Howard (1854-1907) was also involved with the manufacturing company. He married Ada's sister Ella K. Niles (about 1860 to 1906) and they had two children, Claude Niles Manning (b. 1882) and Grace Rene Manning (1884-1968, later Wolcott).
