Scope and Content Note

The Maranville Family Papers contain correspondence between family members of the Maranville (or DeMaranville) Family of Poultney, Vermont and Ticonderoga and Clarkson, New York covering day-to-day events. The collection also includes photocopies of newspaper articles and poems, a photocopy of a poster of the Civil War veterans and members of Joyce Post No. 49, a document listing the birth and death dates of the Maranville family members, and Civil War letters of four Maranville brothers, three of whom served in the Second VT Infantry and one in the Second NY Cavalry.

Biographical / Historical

Merrit L. DeMaranville was born on March 11, 1814 in Moriah, New York. He married Mary Ann Reed on March 12, 1834 in Poultney, Vermont, and worked as a physician. Mary Ann was born on April 26, 1820 in Castleton, Vermont. The two had six children: Rollin E., Albert E., Merrit P. "Pulaski", Francis M., Egbert Lillie, and Mary E. Mary Ann died on May 3, 1853. On June 15, 1854, Merrit L. married Corris A. Low in Bridport, Vermont. The two did not have any children. Merrit L. died on August 26, 1895 in Evansville, Wisconsin.

Rollin E. Maranville was born on December 5, 1836. He served in Harris' Light Cavalry (Second NY Cavalry) during the Civil War. He enlisted on August 21, 1861, and was immediately sent to the front. Rollin E. lost his leg in August 1862 during the Second Battle of Bull Run, and died in a hospital in Alexandria, Virginia on September 13, 1862.

Albert E. Maranville was born on February 8, 1839. He served in Company B of the Second Vermont Regiment, known as the "Old Vermont Brigade," and enlisted on May 9, 1861. He later married Julia Samantha Maranville, and worked in a slate quarry. Albert died on June 20, 1922 in Hudson Falls, New York. He was survived by his daughter Ida, and brother Egbert.

Francis M. De Maranville was born on October 28, 1841. She married P.H. Canton. The couple had two children, both of whom died in infancy: Lilly M., and Emma. Francis died on May 3, 1897.

Merrit P. Maranville was born on November 19, 1843. He served in Company B of the Second Vermont Regiment ("The Old Vermont Brigade"), and enlisted on August 13, 1862. He later married Jane Elizabeth Thayer. The two had one child: Merrit David. Merrit P. died on March 12, 1917.

Egbert Lillie Maranville was born in Ticonderoga, NY on June 8, 1848. On December 19, 1863, at 15 years old, he enlisted for the Civil War. Egbert served in the Second Vermont Regiment, Sixth Army Corps ("The Old Vermont Brigade"). He fought in 9 battles, was wounded three times, and taken prisoner three times, escaping after each capture. After the war, Egbert settled in Poultney, VT, where he worked as a carpenter.

Egbert Maranville married Henrietta Louisa Lamb on July 17, 1869. The couple had six children: Walter W., Bertha A., Jessie L., Ella G. (d. age 7), Harry S., George E, and Gerald I. (d. in infancy). On January 16, 1940, following an illness lasting several weeks, Egbert L. Maranville died at the age of 91. He was survived by four children, Walter, Bertha, Harry, and George E., and was the last Civil War veteran of Poultney, VT.

Mary E. DeMaranville was born on April 24, 1853, and died on July 25, 1853.
