Stone Family Diaries
Scope and Contents
Collection consists of a cashbook and many small, pocket diaries containing handwritten entries by Alney, Don, and Betty Stone; George A. Stuart; and Ruth Barkyoumb of Westford, VT. Coverage focuses on recording daily life and activities, touching on topics including travel, personal health, family life and interpersonal connections, livestock and agriculture, weather, religious services, housework, and food preparation.

Biographical / Historical
Alney Stone (1820-1900) was the son of Allen Stone (1784-1858) and Rachel Wilcox Stone (1797-1865). In 1851, he married Marcia Parsons (1829-1907). They had 3 children, Don A. Stone (1853-1929), Betsey Laura Stone Stuart (1856-1906), and Julian B. Stone (1861-1906), see below. Alney Stone worked as a farmer and also held many public roles: Westford Selectman at the time of the Civil War, representative for Westford in the Vermont Legislature (1862, 1864-1865), Assistant Judge of Chittenden County Court (1872-1874), Justice of the Peace for over 50 years, and president of the Vermont Dairymen's Association. His obituary described him as "Westford's best known citizen" and "one of the leading citizens of Chittenden County."
Don Alney Stone (1853-1929) attended Spaulding High School and the University of Vermont (class of 1878). In 1883 he was admitted to the Vermont bar and practiced in Burlington until 1897. In 1884, he married Bessie Frances Macomber (1863-1954). He worked as a deputy collector for U.S. Customs (1884-1887, 1889-1893) and as a special agent of the U.S. Treasury Department starting from 1897 to 1927 when he retired.
Betsey Laura Stone (1856-1906) married John Allen Stuart (1848-1904) in 1879. They had four children that lived into adulthood: George A. Stuart (1880-1973), Marcia C. Stuart (1882-1942) (known as Mattie), Robert C. Stuart (1885-1907), and Ruth Leila Stuart (1895-1975) (also known as L. Ruth Stuart). George A. Stuart married E. Eugenie Barkyoumb (1880-1938) in 1906. One of Eugenie's sisters was named Ruth Barkyoumb (1896-1978, later Dixon). Ruth L. Stuart married Park Henley Newton (1893-1973) in 1917. He was an active Mason throughout his adult life, holding many offices.
Julian B. Stone (1861-1906) worked as a farmer and also as a conductor for both the military post electric railroad and Burlington city streetcar, according to his obituary. He was an active Mason and member of the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias lodges. In 1885, he married Libbie S. Stevens (1866-1899) and they had three children, Carolyn "Carrie" Lillian Stone (1886-1970, later Chamberlin), Carrol L. Stone (1889-1958), and Birnie A Stone (1891-1901).
