Biographical / Historical

Peter Swereda was born in New Jersey on May 20, 1920 to Paul Swereda and Elizabeth (Pregutski) Swereda. Both had immigrated to the US from Poland. Peter was raised in the Patterson, New Jersey area with 3 older siblings: Catherine "Kay" (1911-1991), Ann (about 1913-2003), and John (1917-1993).

On January 30, 1943, he enlisted as a Private in the Army and went on to train in the Army Air Corps, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. His military training and service took him to sites in Vermont (1943), Missouri (1943), Arkansas (1944), Wyoming (1944-1945) and the Air Force Academy in Colorado. He later became a bomber in the Pacific theater in World War II. His brother John Swereda also served in the Army.

In 1943 in Missouri, he married Louise Rose Klewin. They settled in California where Peter died in 2003. His family at that time included 3 children (Patty, Peter, and Robert) and 6 grandchildren.

Researchers should note a 1973 name change (indicated in a Social Security application) to Peter Swenson.
