Historical Note
The Women of UVM has been in existence for over a century providing social connection and intellectual information sharing. Over time the group has been focused on domestic life, community development through service work and fundraising, professional development and advancement, social events and programs, and building community among members. Key events have included annual meetings, a Welcome Back Cafe, fashion shows, workshops, theatre performances, and a holiday tea at the President's home. Special interest groups reflect the hobbies of members such as music, hiking, writing, and various crafts. Membership has also expanded over the years to include wives of faculty and administrators, employees, their spouses, alumni, and any interested person. Previous names have included Ladies of the Faculty (1910-1925), Women's Faculty Club (1920s and 1930s), Women of the Faculty (1950s), The Women of UVM (sicnce 1966). It is not clear if the earliest name, Ladies of the Faculty, refers to group members being faculty themselves or rather the members were married to men who were members of the university faculty.
